FAQs

How does therapy work?

Because each person has different issues and goals for therapy, different histories, and different personality types, therapy will be different depending on the individual. There is no “one size fits all” in terms of our approach.

The first step is to establish a non-judgemental connection between you and your therapist so there is a foundation of trust and teamwork. You are the expert on your own life, and your therapist will join you on your journey and use their expertise to guide you, share ideas, and tailor their approach to your needs. At any point, you are welcome to share feedback on what is and isn’t working in your therapeutic relationship.

How long will it take?

Unfortunately, this is not possible to say on a general FAQs page. Everyone’s circumstances are unique to them and the length of time therapy can take to allow you to accomplish your goals depends on your desire for personal development, your commitment, and the factors that are driving you to seek therapy in the first place.

What is expected of me in therapy?

I am so glad you are dedicated to getting the most out of your sessions. Your active participation and dedication are crucial to your success. After all, we only see each other for a session a week. It’s the work you do outside of our sessions that will really help you see your personal growth and development.

It’s also helpful for you to be honest about what is working and what is not in your experience with therapy so your therapist can continue to fine-tune their approach to meet your needs. Bring your truest feelings, speak up if something doesn’t feel right, and view your sessions as collaborative experiences. But most of all, come as you are!

What if I don’t really know what my issues are or worry I can’t articulate them well enough?

In short: we will figure it out together. We do not expect you to be able to express yourself perfectly, and part of our training as therapists allows us to ask the right questions to help you discern, understand, and express your feelings more clearly.

It’s very common for clients to not know exactly what is wrong, only that something is off. That’s all you need to know to get started. You are the expert of your own life story. Our role is to join you, bringing our professional training and skills, to partner with you, guide you, and challenge you towards a path to self-exploration and growth.

How exactly does online counseling work?

We use our HIPAA-compliant video therapy platforms to conduct secure therapy sessions virtually. It’s proven effective at meeting the needs of our clients in sessions. We have also successfully used EMDR via teletherapy. We will discuss meeting options and concerns in your consultation session to make sure that online counseling is a good fit for you.
